About Us

About this blog:

Hola! My name is Analily and I am passionate about opening up a world of communication for my son…en español!  I consider myself fluent in speaking Spanish.  Reading and writing?  Well, I’m trying!  My parents were born in Mexico, but graduated from Garfield High School in East Los Angeles.  At home they spoke Spanish to each other and I grew up speaking Spanish until I started school. Once school began, I spoke only Spanglish at home with my parents.

I met my husband in high school and we only speak English to each other, however, we knew that we wanted to raise our future child to speak Spanish.  It was important to him because his mother (from Guatemala) only speaks Spanish and it was important to me because I wanted my future child to be proud of his/her roots.

What we did not expect was a speech delay.  Our son began receiving speech services (in Spanish!) at 18 months.  I felt like it was my fault that he was not speaking because my Spanish was subpar.  I had regrets speaking to him only in Spanish. My amazing husband and I fervidly worked with him at home and used all the tips his Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant gave us and by 3 years old, our son had exited the Speech program.

Currently our son, Fernando, is 4 years old, understands and speaks primarily in Spanish, however, is beginning to speak and understand English.  His remarkable speech growth is the reason for starting Raising Español.  I want others out there who may be doubting raising their children in a Spanish and/or bilingual home to understand that it is possible.  I want you to follow our journey because I wish I would have had a blog available for me to read when I was doubting myself. This is for us, raising our bilingual children, sin miedo.

I am a mother to a four year old named Fernando, wife to Dennis, and a fifth grade teacher.  I received my Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine), and my teaching credential and Master’s degree in Education from Whittier College.  I grew up in Pico Rivera, CA.  I think King Taco has the best tacos in the world and I love Reggaeton.
